This learning program equips supervisors with the knowledge and skills necessary to support staff in applying Motivational Interviewing (MI) with the families they serve.
The course focuses on the supervisor’s use of coaching to strengthen staff’s ability to recognize and use MI. Learners review videos and participate in real-world scenarios to practice MI-consistent approaches, coaching strategies and develop personalized action plans to reinforce staff skill development.
Who Should Attend?
Supervisors at contracted Family Services providers (Prevention services) who are participating in the MI Connect initiative.
Course Benefits
Learners will:
- Understand MI principles and strategies to support staff in their practice.
- Identify and practice techniques to support staff use of MI.
- Distinguish between MI-consistent and MI-inconsistent communication.
- Practice coaching and feedback strategies aligned with MI-consistent approaches.
Course Prerequisites
Prior to attending this course, learners are required to have completed all components of Foundations of Motivational Interviewing: Communicating to Build Partnerships, Foundations of Motivational Interviewing: Practicum and Building Coaching Competency.
Course Components
Once enrolled in the course, learners will complete:
- An online pre-test.
- A one-day, instructor-led workshop.
- An online post-test.
Completion of all components is necessary to receive a Certificate of Completion.
Continuing Education Units
The New York City Administration for Children’s Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0402. This course is 3.0 contact hours/.3 CEUs. CEU credit is contingent upon completion
of all course components.
